Introduction and Basic Services
A luxury drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in the hills of West Hollywood, The Hills was founded by Dr. Howard C. Samuels, PsyD, who specializes in the treatment of mood and addictive disorders, love addiction and substance abuse intervention. He previously co-founded the wildly popular Wonderland center, and went on to open The Hills after a split with his partners. He is a former cocaine and heroin addict with 29 years of sobriety. Samuels is a proponent of both formal, structured alcohol and drug addiction treatment in a rehab setting, as well as 12-step communities such as NA and AA. The Hills incorporates 12-step recovery principles, individual therapy and group therapy, in addition to providing detox if needed.
The Hills offers individually customized programs for its wealthy clientele struggling with addiction, including process addictions, eating disorders and dual diagnosis. It provides medical detox, a residential program and outpatient-based treatments. Also, sober companions and a robust aftercare program are available after formalized treatment ends.
Facility and Meals
The Hills is a gated home that is co-ed and consists of three luxury, French countryside-esque houses in the Hollywood Hills complete with WiFi and cable TV. Together it has 21 bedrooms, some shared and some private. There is also a separate three-bedroom cottage for clients who would like to detox alone (there is also a separate residence for couples detoxing). The detox cottage comes with its own doctor.
Dogs (well behaved, medium sized and under, of course) are welcome as well as long as they are on a leash when outside the client’s room, crated or penned at night, and always at least five feet away from the kitchen. It is the client’s responsibility to find a walker and supplies if needed, as well as cleaning up and taking care of any damage. It is said that caring for animals helps with the healing of the brain after addiction.
Cell Phones and electronics are allowed as well. Computers are gradually introduced as the client continues their program. A recreation room is provided for relaxing and working on projects.
The food is prepared by a world class gourmet chef who makes a lot of healthy classic food including tenderloins and lobster but also a lot of healthy vegetable dishes. He can accommodate any food issues such as allergies or intolerances and can whip up anything gluten free, low carb, vegan, vegetarian or whatever else comes down the pike.
Treatment Protocol and Team
Treatment for the 30 day residential program involves the 12 steps but it is not forced upon the client, even though it is strongly recommended. There are also a lot of evidence-based modalities, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), narrative therapy, solution-focused therapy, and systemic family therapy. The Hills also offers programs for LGBTQ clients, young adults and men and women only.
The day starts around 7:30 am with daily meditation then breakfast followed by groups, meetings and classes. They end the day with an AA meeting at night. While The Hills does facilitate 12-step, where it shines is its individualized program. After some meetings and seeing where their interests are, the clients themselves pick which classes they would like to attend. Some of them include gardening, sex and love addiction and aging in recovery. The most popular, and specifically what Dr. Samuels is known for, is “The Beast.” “The Beast” is where Dr. Samuels speaks with specific people in the group and they figure out what feeds “The Beast” (AKA their addiction) and it can get quite personal and intense.
The Hills offers a robust outpatient option including a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and general outpatient programming. PHP runs six or seven days a week, and IOP involves between three to six three-hour sessions each week.
A family program is available to help loved ones understand what’s happening and deal with the changed individual who will be coming back to them (and what to expect) and intervention services.
The staff (most of whom are in recovery themselves) also includes a nurse and Master’s-level therapists, MFTs, personal trainers, nutritional counselors, art therapists, grief therapists and on-site MDs, all of whom are recovering addicts with between 20 and 35 years of sobriety. The staff to patient ratio is very low at one to three, and they offer 24 hour clinical care.
As previously mentioned, dogs are welcome at all the houses in The Hills, as it is said that caring for animals helps the chemicals in the brain naturally repopulate.
There are two pools and several on-site yoga classes every week, as well as staff-led hikes in the surrounding hills and a membership provided at Crunch gym. A staff member escorts clients to the gym when it fits into their schedule.
Other activities facilitated by The Hills include acupuncture, equine therapy, massage, yoga and wellness coaching. The client can even pay for extra for activities like snowboarding trips or surfing lessons.
When the residential treatment is finished, a sober companion can come stay with the client for a while to make sure there is nothing triggering around and to help keep them on the straight and narrow while they start their new, sober life.
Finally, the Hills also has three sober living homes with housekeeping, weekly meetings and drug testing.
The Hills has a vast array of approaches to drug and alcohol addiction treatment. From 12-step meetings to personalized classes, clients can expect an approach that works for them. There are also plenty of options for recreational activities. Some would view the option to bring their dog as a major asset too. Finally, the family program and aftercare support are top notch. The Hills is one of the most reputable treatment facilities available in Los Angeles, and that’s saying a lot for an area with so many options for rehab.
