  • "American Idol" Alum Antonella Barba Gets 45-Month Sentence For Drug Trafficking

"American Idol" Alum Antonella Barba Gets 45-Month Sentence For Drug Trafficking

“The case is over. My client accepted responsibility and the judge was very fair — very concerned about her,” said Barba’s lawyer.

On Wednesday, November 21, former American Idol star Antonella Barba was sentenced to 45 months in federal prison for trafficking fentanyl.

Barba was arrested in October 2018 in Norfolk, Virginia after authorities received a tip leading to a search of Barba’s rental car with a K-9 unit.

“A dog handler screened Barba’s rental vehicle with a drug dog, which alerted on the vehicle. The canine officer searched Barba’s rental vehicle and discovered a closed shoebox in plain view on the front passenger floorboard.”

According to People, the statement read,“The officer opened the shoebox and discovered a plastic bag containing a large quantity of a white, rock-like substance.” The substance was later determined to be 830 grams of fentanyl.

The former reality star was reportedly a courier who was to deliver the drugs to a stashhouse in Norfolk. NBC News reported in February that Barba was hit with a federal indictment featuring 11 federal charges including one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess cocaine, heroin and fentanyl with the intent to distribute, and 10 counts of distribution or possession of cocaine, heroin and fentanyl with the intent to distribute.

In July, Barba pled guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin, fentanyl and cocaine. Barba was facing a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison plus a hefty fine but her attorneys were pushing for 37-46 months.

    “Where It All Went Wrong”

Antonella Barba appeared as a contestant on the sixth season of the hit singing competition show American Idol in 2007. Though Barba made it all the way to the show’s final 16, her mother is claiming in documents filed last week in a bid to get Barba a lighter sentence that the show was where “it all went wrong” for her daughter. Her mother contended that being voted off the hit show sent Barba into a spiral that led her into a downward spiral.

The documents appear to have worked. Barba received a 45-month sentence and will be credited for time served and could even take a year off her sentence if she completes a 500-hour residential drug treatment program.

People spoke to Barba’s lawyer James Broccoletti after the sentencing.

“The case is over. My client accepted responsibility and the judge was very fair — very concerned about her. Because she knows what’s happening, there’s now closure to this part of her life. It’s been liberating [for her],” Broccoletti said. “She is able to have a concrete understanding of where she is and where she’s going next. With all things considered, she’s in the best place she can be emotionally and psychologically.”

  • American Idol Contestant Celebrates Sobriety With Demi Lovato Song

American Idol Contestant Celebrates Sobriety With Demi Lovato Song

Contestant Logan Johnson shared his journey to sobriety with American Idol’s panel of celeb judges.

Eight months ago Logan Johnson, 20, was living in active addiction to opioids. Now he is bound for Hollywood after a heartfelt audition for American Idol, during which he sang Demi Lovato’s relapse ballad “Sober.”

“Growing up, music was everything to me, but the path to get there wasn’t always an easy one,” Johnson said in a video for the singing contest.

When Johnson was growing up in Boise, Idaho, he saw his older brother struggle with addiction.

“It was pretty hard for me to live with,” Johnson said. “I thought I would learn from his example, but unfortunately I really got into painkillers.”

Despite knowing the pain of loving someone with addiction, Johnson found himself following in his brother’s footsteps.

“I looked at what he was doing and I told myself that I was better than what he was. But the truth of the matter was I was doing the exact same things — lying to my loved ones, to everyone in my life. I really feel like I’ve put my family though a hell that I wouldn’t wish upon anyone,” Johnson said.

However, Johnson and his brother were both able to get help.

“I just got to a point where I had to change. It was really, really hard to finally come clean and say I’ve got my own issues too and I need help,” Johnson said. “I really look up to my brother and all the things that he’s had to face. We have been able to connect on another level and to really be there for each other.”

Johnson’s mother, Nanette, said that American Idol could be the win that the family needs after many years of hardship.

“I don’t think most people, unless they’re living with addiction in their family, I don’t think they know how hard it is,” she said.

Standing before judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry, Johnson was open about his addiction experience.

“I’m grateful today that I have 8 months of sobriety. I just know that I have a lot to share with my music,” he told them, before launching into “Sober.”

When he finished, the judges praised Johnson’s voice before calling his family in to watch them unanimously vote “yes” to sending him to Hollywood.

“One day at a time,” Perry told Johnson. “Congratulations. You’ve worked really hard and you should be proud of your clarity that you’ve given yourself. You’ve earned this.”

Richie told him, “You now have three more people on your support team.”

  • "American Idol" Contestant Accused Of Fentanyl Distribution

"American Idol" Contestant Accused Of Fentanyl Distribution

Feds allege that former Idol contestant Antonella Barba was part of a major Virginia drug ring.

Antonella Barba, who appeared in the sixth season of the reality/competition series American Idol, was indicted on federal charges for allegedly distributing fentanyl, heroin and other narcotics for a major drug ring.

Barba was arrested in Virginia in late 2018 on charges of intending to sell 100 grams or more of heroin.

Barba pled not guilty to the charge, but now faces 11 federal indictments, including 10 counts of distribution or possession of cocaine, heroin and fentanyl with the intent to distribute.

According to newly released court documents, Barba was allegedly part of a drug ring that operated in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area from late 2017 to the fall of 2018. The ring reportedly used an apartment to store heroin, cocaine and money and made drug sales during the aforementioned time period in various locations throughout the Hampton Roads region.

The indictment also alleges that a member of the ring – Justin Michael Isaac – instructed Barba to deliver approximately 830 grams of fentanyl to another conspirator on October 11, 2018. Barba was arrested that morning and charged in district court with allegedly selling or intending to sell heroin

After pleading not guilty to the October charge, Barba was out of bail and awaiting trial in state court, but was taken back into custody on February 11, 2019 for the federal indictments. A detention hearing is set for February 14, 2019 in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Virginia. Barba’s attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Suzanne Katchmar, did not respond to multiple requests for comments by various media outlets.

Barba, a native of New Jersey and current Los Angeles resident, appeared on Idol in 2007 and reached the Top 16 before her elimination. She subsequently returned to college and earned a degree in architecture, and told Entertainment Weekly in 2009 that she was working on an album.

Barba, who most recently reunited with several fellow Idol contestants for a parody of “We Are the World” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! was also charged with two misdemeanor charges of shoplifting at an Urban Outfitters in 2011.
