  • Demi Moore To Address Addiction In New Memoir

Demi Moore To Address Addiction In New Memoir

Moore’s upcoming memoir will examine the “real crisis point” that led her to enter rehab.

Actress Demi Moore will tackle a host of issues, from her career and famous husbands and offspring to her struggle with addiction and body image issues in a new memoir, Inside Out.

The book, which will be released by HarperCollins on September 24, 2019, promises to detail what Moore described in a 2018 speech as a “real crisis point” that sent her to rehabilitation.

As Harper executive editor Jennifer Barth noted in a press release for Inside Out, the book is “first and foremost a woman’s story; that the woman in question happens to be one of the most celebrated actresses of our time only makes her journey of vulnerability, strength and self-acceptance all that more resonant.”

Though Moore has yet to speak publicly about the contents of her book, People quoted a speech she gave in 2018 at an annual awards luncheon given by Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, a sober living facility in Los Angeles.

Moore, who had been named woman of year by Friendly House, spoke about her return to sanity and sobriety from what she described as a “path of real self-destruction.”

“No matter what successes I had, I just never felt good enough,” she said at the event. “This self-destructive path, it very quickly brought me to a real crisis point. And it wasn’t clear at the time the reason—maybe it was divine intervention—but two people who I barely knew stepped up and took a stand for me, and they presented me with an opportunity.”

As Moore described it, the opportunity was more like an ultimatum. “Unless I was dead, I better show up,” she explained. “They gave me a chance to redirect the course of my life before I destroyed everything. And I’m so grateful because without that opportunity, without their belief in me, I wouldn’t be standing here today.”

In 2012, Moore was hospitalized after collapsing and experiencing a seizure-like reaction. Though the incident was initially written off as exhaustion, a recording of the 911 call from Moore’s home suggested that the actress had smoked something before going into convulsions. After her hospital stay, Moore entered rehabilitation at Cirque Lodge in Utah.

Moore, who has resumed her acting career with appearances in Rough Night, Fox’s Empire series and the upcoming Corporate Animals, said that confronting her substance issues gave her the strength to address other, more deep-rooted problems.

“In a moment of great struggle for me, I reached out to a wise teacher and expressed my fear that I wasn’t good enough,” she said at the 2018 event. “And she said, ‘You will never be good enough but you can know the value of your worth. Put down the measuring stick.’ So today, I put down the measuring stick.”

  • SNL’s Chris Kattan Alleges That On-Air Accident Led to Opioid Addiction

SNL’s Chris Kattan Alleges That On-Air Accident Led to Opioid Addiction

Kattan details his painkiller addiction in his new memoir Baby Don’t Hurt Me: Stories and Scars from Saturday Night Live.

Former Saturday Night Live player Chris Kattan has claimed that an accidental fall during a sketch in 2001 left him with a broken neck that ultimately led to a dependency on painkillers and the collapse of his acting career.

Kattan, who starred on the NBC comedy series from 1996 to 2003, made the allegation in a new memoir, Baby Don’t Hurt Me: Stories and Scars from Saturday Night Live, which details how he struck his head after falling from a chair during the May 12, 2001 episode.

According to Kattan, that fall left him with not only limited mobility, but also an addiction to opioids as a result of five surgeries to correct the problem, and the loss of his marriage and a burgeoning career in feature films.

Both Variety and New York Daily News have reported that individuals who worked on the show when Kattan’s accident allegedly took place have claimed that they have no recollection of the fall or any resulting injury.

The Variety coverage also included comments by a surgeon who met with Kattan in 2005 and confirmed that the actor and comedian appeared to have suffered an incomplete spinal injury at some point.

As Variety noted, Kattan, whose whose SNL characters included the exotic dancer Mango and one-half of the head-bobbing Butabi Brothers, mentioned an injury while appearing on Dancing with the Stars as a way to explain what was perceived as stiffness in his movements.

But he never attributed that injury to any particular moment until penning his memoir, which was published on May 7, 2019. In the book, Kattan alleged that he was supposed to fall backwards from a chair during a sketch about children who imitate the characters on the Golden Girls.

Though concerned about the safety of the pratfall, Kattan went through with the sketch and reportedly landed hard on his head. He also alleged that the pain he experienced lasted for months, which eventually prompted him to inform “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels about the injury. According to Kattan, NBC paid for two of an eventual five surgeries needed for treatment.

Kattan also alleged in the book that the injury marked the beginning of a long period of personal and professional setbacks, which included an addiction to painkillers, the death of his father and the collapse of his marriage in 2009 after just two months.

“The impact that my injury and subsequent surgeries had on my career was immense, but more importantly, the fallout proved to be devastating to some of the closest relationships in my life.”

Kattan enjoyed a brief period of movie stardom before and immediately after his departure from “SNL,” which included starring roles in a feature-length version of Night at the Roxbury and Corky Romano, but gradually transitioned to independent films and guest roles on television, including The Middle.

Inquiries made about the accident to NBC and various SNL staffer members by both Variety and the New York Daily News have not yielded any confirmation that Kattan experienced the injury he described in the book.

Both Lorne Michaels and NBC declined to comment on the story, but SNL staff, some of whom worked closely with Kattan on the show, were unable to recall any injury, even after making their own internal inquiries.

However, Variety was able to speak with Kattan’s surgeon, Dr. Carl Lauryssen, M.D., who said that the comedian had suffered an incomplete spinal cord injury, though did not have specifics on the reported cause. Lauryssen also noted that Kattan had undergone a “complex surgery” to regain some function and mobility, but added that “he’s going to live with the effects for the rest of his life.”

Kattan told Variety that in writing Baby Don’t Hurt Me, he “tried to tell the truth. It feels good to just finally say everything about it. I don’t think it really hurts anybody. It’s just something I needed to say.”

  • Wendy Williams Set To Leave Sober Home, Files For Divorce

Wendy Williams Set To Leave Sober Home, Files For Divorce

Williams says her sober home stay was one of the best things that has ever happened to her.

Talk show host Wendy Williams is moving on, in her personal life and in her recovery, announcing this week that she filed for divorce and is making plans to leave the sober home that she has been staying at.

“I’m moving out of the sober house in just a few days,” she said on her show on Monday (April 15), according to USA Today. “It’ll be Wendy on her own.

She said that staying in the sober home gave her a chance to reflect on her life, without distraction.

“I have to tell you, I’ve been dealing with issues with addiction, alcoholism, and I have a whole new life that I planned for myself and my son. Believe me you, when you lay in a room with no TV and four gray walls all day and no telephone… and you lay there and you think about your life – this is my life in the sober house – it’s one of the best things, honestly, that could have ever happened to me.”

Williams seemed hopeful for the future.

She said, “Addressing my sobriety, my addiction, head-on has really helped me sort out every single compartment of my life. I have a commitment to me and my son to come out of here better, stronger and faster than ever.”

Last week, Williams filed for divorce from her husband of 22 years, Kevin Hunter. The couple has a 19-year-old son, Kevin Jr., and Hunter reportedly recently had a baby with his mistress. Despite initially insisting that they were staying together, it is clear that Williams and Hunter now intend to divorce.

On Tuesday (April 16), Hunter issued the following statement to PEOPLE

“I am going through a time of self-reflection and am trying to right some wrongs. No matter what the outcome is or what the future holds, we are still The Hunter Family and I will continue to work with and fully support my wife in this business and through any and all obstacles she may face living her new life of sobriety, while I also work on mine.”

A source told PEOPLE that Williams could not move past Hunter’s long-term infidelity.

The source said, “Wendy is telling people she had no idea he had been having an affair, but when she found out the details, it turned out he had been seeing the woman he had a baby with for 15-16 years. That made her realize it was time to move forward with her life. Seek treatment and move on. She’s not taking him back.”

  • Clark Gable III Died from Accidental Fentanyl, Oxycodone Overdose

Clark Gable III Died from Accidental Fentanyl, Oxycodone Overdose

The grandson of Hollywood legend Clark Gable was found unresponsive in his home on February 22.

Actor and television host Clark Gable III’s untimely death at the age of 30 was due to an accidental overdose of fentanyl, as well as oxycodone and alprazolam (Xanax).

Several news sources, including TMZ and the New York Daily News, revealed that an autopsy report from the medical examiner’s office in Dallas County, Texas, determined that Gable, who was best known as the host of Cheaters, died on February 22, 2019 from the “combined effects” of the three drugs.

TMZ also quoted its conversation with Cheaters producer Bobby Goldstein, who said that Gable’s drug use was known on set.

Gable III—the grandson of Hollywood legend Clark Gable—was found unresponsive in his home in Dallas by his girlfriend on the morning of February 22 and transported to an area hospital, where according to the medical examiner’s report, he died at 9:11 a.m.

At the time of his death, Gable’s passing was credited to undisclosed causes, but in an interview with Radar Online, former girlfriend Heather Chadwell said that they both struggled with addiction during their relationship.

“We were together on-and-off for several years, and during that time, we went through a lot,” she told Radar. Chadwell also noted that after their split, Gable called her from the hospital, where he had undergone surgery to treat a stab wound that caused one of his lungs to collapse.

Sources on the set of Cheaters, which Gable hosted in its 13th and 14th season, said that Gable’s drug use concerned some crew members to the point that they spoke to producer Goldstein about his health.

Goldstein told TMZ on April 12 that he addressed the issue with Gable, but was told that there was no cause for concern.

At the time of his death, Gable, who had a daughter with his girlfriend Summer in 2017, had either completed or was working on acting roles in several independent features, and was reportedly compiling a documentary about his grandfather, who starred in Gone with the Wind

Gable is the most recent celebrity whose death has been attributed to fentanyl.

Musicians Prince and Tom Petty both succumbed to overdoses caused by the powerful synthetic opioid, as did hip-hop musicians Mac Miller and Lil Peep and Jay Bennett of the band Wilco.

  • Wendy Williams Reportedly Relapses After Sober Home Announcement

Wendy Williams Reportedly Relapses After Sober Home Announcement

Last week, Williams announced on-air that she was in living in a sober home.

Less than a week after revealing on-air that she was living in a sober home, talk show host Wendy Williams apparently relapsed and was reportedly hospitalized because of alcohol intake.

According to The Daily Mail, Williams, 54, checked herself out of her sober living facility on Monday after finding out that her husband’s mistress had a baby.

“She was in a bad way and disappeared from the studio after her show Monday. She went back to the sober house only to check herself out and decided to start drinking,” a source told The Daily Mail

The source continued, “It’s not clear where she went but she headed in the direction of her home in Jersey and managed to find alcohol along the way. Word got back to the studio and there was panic and concern, everyone was looking for her, no one knew whether there would be a show [Tuesday]. She was eventually found and was drunk, she was immediately taken to the hospital.”

After getting a bag of IV fluids, Williams was apparently released from the hospital. She did make it to record her show on Tuesday.

“Everyone was amazed that she made it in to the studio this morning to do the show,” the source said.

William’s husband, Kevin Hunter, reportedly had an affair with Sharina Hudson, 33. Hudson delivered a baby last week, which may have prompted Williams’ relapse.

“Wendy is considering divorcing Kevin. She’s really distraught over the situation, she knew about Sharina but didn’t think a baby would arrive, she didn’t think Kevin would go this far, she’s lost and everyone is worried for her,” the source said.

Williams was spotted without her wedding ring on Monday, although she had it on during the taping of her show on Tuesday. By Wednesday, however, TMZ reported that Williams said she was “doing wonderful” and was spotted wearing her wedding ring.

Last week when Williams announced that she had been living in a sober home, she said that her husband was the only person who she had confided in about her treatment.

“Only Kevin knows about this. Not my parents, nobody. Nobody knew because I look so glamorous out here,” she said, according to PEOPLE. “I am driven by my 24-hour sober coach back to a home that I live in the tri-state with a bunch of smelly boys who have become my family.”

Last week, Hunter said that he and his wife were working together to strengthen their family

“We’re doing well as a family,” he said. “We are moving forward with working on her sobriety and doing the work to help others, not just ourselves.”

  • Clark Gable III, Grandson of Hollywood Legend, Dies At 30

Clark Gable III, Grandson of Hollywood Legend, Dies At 30

The 30-year-old actor had reportedly battled addiction prior to his death.

Television host and actor Clark Gable III, whose grandfather was iconic Hollywood actor Clark Gable, died on February 22, 2019 in Dallas, Texas.

Variety confirmed with the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office that the 30-year-old Gable, who was the host of the TV show Cheaters, was found unresponsive in his home in Dallas by his girlfriend that morning and transported to an area hospital, where he died from undisclosed causes.

In an interview with Radar Online, an ex-girlfriend of Gable’s claimed that he had suffered from substance abuse issues. Heather Chadwell claimed that he had struggled with addiction during the course of their relationship.

“We were together on-and-off for several years, and during that time, we went through a lot,” said Chadwell. Gable would disappear for “days on end,” which strained their relationship. “We were battling our own addiction issues, and it was too much.”

Chadwell also said that after the pair split, she received a call from a hospital where Clark was being treated for a stab wound in his lung. The lung later became infected and collapsed, according to Chadwell, and required surgery. “It was just so hard on him, and it was hard to watch him suffer.”

Gable’s mother, Tracy Scheff, told Radar that she learned about her son’s death from his girlfriend, Summer, with whom he had a daughter in 2017. “I got a call from his girlfriend, and I didn’t even know what she was saying, she was so hysterical,” said Scheff. Gable’s sister, actress Kayley Gable, posted a tribute to her sibling that same morning.

“My brother was found unresponsive this morning… I love you Clarkie, I’m so sorry we couldn’t save you,” she wrote. “My heart is broken and shattered.”

In 2011, Gable served six days in jail for pointing a laser at a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter as it flew above Hollywood Boulevard. He later apologized for the incident and said he was glad to have served his time and be “able to set an example.”

At the time of his death, Gable was reported to have appeared in a feature film, Sunset at Dawn, which also featured his father, John Clark Gable. He was also reportedly working on a documentary about his grandfather, who starred in such films as Gone with the Wind

  • Jussie Smollett Reportedly Told Police He Has An Untreated Drug Problem

Jussie Smollett Reportedly Told Police He Has An Untreated Drug Problem

The “Empire” actor has been heavily scrutinized after the Chicago Police Department alleged he may have orchestrated a hate crime against himself.

After allegations surfaced that Jussie Smollett staged a hate crime against himself, the actor and singer has reportedly told police that he has an “untreated drug problem,” according to Page Six

The 36-year-old Empire actor, who is black and openly gay, has recently been the subject of media scrutiny after reporting a hate attack on Jan. 29 in which two men assaulted him. But upon investigating, according to the Chicago Tribune, law enforcement officials allegedly have reason to believe Smollett arranged the attack himself.

One of the two brothers Smollett allegedly paid to pull off the attack may have also served as his drug dealer, according to TMZ. Prosecutors in the case reportedly said that Abimbola “Abel” Osundairo dealt “designer drugs” to Smollett numerous times dating back to spring of 2018.

Previously, Smollett reported not having any alcohol or mental health issues when filling out legal forms. As such, there is speculation that Smollett may be claiming to have an untreated problem in order to use it as a defense in legal proceedings.

“This latest claim is only serving to confuse the issue more, because after he was released on a $100,000 bond, he visited the set of Empire to apologize for the situation, while still insisting he had nothing to do with the attack,” Inquisitr stated. “The claim has some wondering whether Smollett is already setting up his defense to argue that he cannot be held accountable for any part he may have taken in staging the attack.”

Smollett has been charged with filing a false report, and could potentially face up to three years in prison if he is found guilty.

The Cook County state attorney’s office said that “Smollett was charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report about the attack, according to the Chicago Tribune. “Hours earlier, the Chicago Police Department announced that Smollett was officially classified as a suspect in a criminal investigation for filing a false police report, a felony.”

Empire has also removed Smollett from two episodes of the show that have yet to air, according to the Chicago Tribune

“The events of the past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for all of us,” executive producers of the show said in a statement. “Jussie has been an important member of our EMPIRE family for the past five years and we care about him deeply. While these allegations are very disturbing, we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out.”

  • Dennis Quaid: "I Saw Myself Being Dead" During A Cocaine Binge

Dennis Quaid: "I Saw Myself Being Dead" During A Cocaine Binge

Dennis Quaid said in a recent interview that in the midst of his cocaine addiction he was doing two grams a day.

Actor Dennis Quaid, who has said that he did cocaine almost daily during the ’80s, told The Sunday Times this week that during one binge he saw himself being dead, a frightening experience that led the star to put himself in rehab.

“I was doing about two grams a day,” Quaid said, according to People. “I was lucky. I had one of those white-light experiences where I saw myself being dead and losing everything I had worked for my whole life.”

That led Quaid to check into rehab, which he completed in 1990, before marrying actress Meg Ryan in 1991. The pair were married until 2001.

Quaid used to use cocaine and alcohol together.

“I would do coke and I would use alcohol to come down,” he said. “I liked coke. I liked it to go out.”

Quaid said that when he stopped using he still experienced cravings for the drug, saying he “missed it for quite a while.” Earlier this year, Quaid said that getting sober was a challenge.

“A lot of it had to be learned,” he said during an interview with People magazine in March “And part of it is just where I come from, I guess. Sometimes your hopes get ahead of your dreams, so you can get disappointed that way. Adversity is the thing that teaches you how to handle that.”

However, these days Quaid, 64, gets his high from working out regularly.

“I’ve always had a high metabolism. I get a high from exercising. I really do,” he said. “I think it does what all those antidepressants are supposed to do.”

He has also taken up meditation, “which puts me into the present moment because that’s all there really is,” he said. “Because either you worry about the future or there’s something about the past, but if you’re in the present moment, then there’s no problem at all. I’m sitting here. I’m just fine.”

Quaid said earlier this year that despite his past drug use and three public divorces, he’s content now.

“I’m most happy when I just kind of get out of my own way and let things happen,” he said. “I’m not the guy that’s living an enlightened experience all the time; I blow my top many times. In life we’re either forced, kicking and screaming, into change—or we learn to cope with it. But I really am at peace now.”

  • Artie Lange Ready For Sobriety: "It’s Been Long Enough"

Artie Lange Ready For Sobriety: "It’s Been Long Enough"

“I’m about to take a big step to help myself, to save my life. I’m sure you will hear about it. I feel like I’m not done. I have another run of laughing with you all.”

Comedian Artie Lange seems ready for a change.

Now 51 years old, his health fading, Lange appears ready to commit to sobriety. And it begins with a treatment program.

“I’m about to go into drug treatment and commit to a full rehab, in-patient,” he said in a recent interview on The Steve Trevelise Show. “I don’t know. I’m a very humble guy at this point. And I think I”m ready to go and do what I gotta do. It’s been long enough.”

With Kevin Meara walking him through the process, Lange is ready to receive help. This time he’s hoping it will stick. Meara is the co-chair of City of Angels, a Groveville, New Jersey-based organization that provides interventions, recovery support, counseling services and more at no cost.

Lange did not expect to live past 25, he said in a previous interview. He was 37 at the time fellow comedian Mitch Hedberg died at the same age of a drug overdose in 2005.

“When I heard [Mitch] died, I had such guilt and said to myself, ‘God, if I was a better person I would have just said, you know what, the heck with the Stern show, forget Caroline’s.’ I should have grabbed him and said, let’s go to the hospital right now. Let’s get detoxed and get better right now,” Lange said on The Steve Trevelise Show.

“But Mitch was the kind of guy who openly said—he was so far gone—[that] he goes, ‘Guys, don’t try to help me. I wanna do heroin ’til I die.’ And that’s a mindset that people get into because they’re so afraid of not being on it that you lose sense of reality. It just is so sad to think of that. And even that didn’t stop me.”

When Trevelise asked if Lange can see himself getting to this point, he replied, “I hope not. I don’t think so. I don’t think I’m even close to there yet.”

Lange, who said in a previous interview that his fading health is starting to worry him, does not want to end up like Hedberg or Greg Giraldo, another comedian who died of a drug overdose in 2010. He was 44 years old.

“I get nervous now, because now I wanna live. Now I do care about it, and I think that maybe I’ve done too much damage,” Lange said to NJ Advance Media in July.

The day after his recent interview on Nov. 5, Lange tweeted some uplifting words to his followers: “I’m about to take a big step to help myself, to save my life. I’m sure you will hear about it. I feel like I’m not done. I have another run of laughing with you all. I want to thank you fans the way you thank me. You have saved my life. You are special to me. Wish me luck.”

  • Beach Boys Singer: Trump Tried To Help Whitney Houston Get Sober

Beach Boys Singer: Trump Tried To Help Whitney Houston Get Sober

“You tried your best to help Whitney. And she’s not the only one you benefited and tried [to help],” said Beach Boys’ Mike Love at a White House event.

When the late Whitney Houston was in the depths of her addiction, a few of her famous friends reached out and tried to help, like Clive Davis, the legendary label executive who signed her, and Kevin Costner, her Bodyguard co-star.

And according to Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love, even Donald Trump offered to help during her time of need.

As AOL reports, Love made this claim at a White House event celebrating the passing of the Music Modernization Act, which will revamp music licensing and royalties.

At the podium, Love addressed the President: “People can say what they want, but you’ve always been a big supporter of some of the best music America ever made. I remember you tried your best to get Whitney Houston in some kind of shape.”

Love then said that Trump and billionaire Revlon executive Ron Perelman tried to get Houston to see the light at an apparent intervention at Mar-a-Lago. “You tried your best to help Whitney. And she’s not the only one you benefited and tried [to help].”

Trump and Houston were friendly in the past. Trump revealed on The Wendy Williams Show that he was a guest at Houston’s wedding to Bobby Brown and claimed the singer was a frequent guest at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump said Houston sang for him “many times,” and he was heartbroken when her vocal abilities went downhill from drugs and alcohol.

“It was very said,” Trump said. “It was certainly a different person in terms of that incredible voice, which was the best I’d heard.”

Trump felt Brown enabled her, adding, “It was just not a marriage made in heaven. It was bad for her –very bad for her. She was trying desperately to make a comeback,” yet her efforts were a “tough go.”

Years ago, in an interview with Billy Bush ironically enough, he also blamed the media for enabling the singer. “When you’re a celebrity and a super-celebrity, people sort of do whatever you want to do. They don’t tell you what’s right and what’s wrong. You see with Michael [Jackson] with the drugs – so many people – probably Whitney. You can show up in terrible shape, and they’ll tell you how great you look.”

Right after Houston’s passing, Trump told Headline News that Houston “had demons like anyone had demons…the drugs were a problem. Something was missing. She needed help. She was crying out for help. And the end result was what happened the other day in L.A.”
