  • Kirstie Alley Shares Hot Take On Psychiatric Meds

Kirstie Alley Shares Hot Take On Psychiatric Meds

The “Cheers” actress had a lively discussion about psychiatric medication on Twitter over the weekend.

Actress Kirstie Alley’s Twitter feed has been the topic of debate over her controversial tweets on psychiatric drugs.

Before her Sunday hot take on psychiatry, Alley shared a heartfelt revelation on the popular app. The Cheers actress opened up about what she does with the money she used to spend on cocaine back when she was battling an addiction to the drug.

“For u who don’t know much about me, I used to be a coke head,” Alley who is now 40 years drug-free tweeted on Thursday. “I quit drugs in 1979 & vowed to spend the same $ weekly on flowers that I’d spent on drugs.”

The 66-year-old added, “I buy & arrange my own flowers as a gift to MYSELF. I buy them in the grocery store.”

Alley’s fans congratulated the actress for her four decades of being drug-free and shared their own sober tales. A couple days later, Alley upset some Twitter users when she called into question the prevalence of psychiatric drugs.

    Hot Takes

“Does anyone else worry about how unconscious we are being rendered by pharmaceutical drugs? Is anyone else concerned that we are the most psych drugged country on the planet? I tell you what, if I was an evil dictator & wanted to control a society, I would drug them into apathy,” Alley tweeted on Sunday.

Her tweet received mixed reviews from her followers, with some lauding Alley, a long-time Scientologist, for speaking out against what she perceives as an overall overprescription of psychiatric drugs. Alley’s views echo those of Tom Cruise, inarguably the world’s most famous living Scientologist.

Cruise caught a wave of backlash from mental health experts and patients after proclaiming his disdain for psych meds in a now-infamous 2005 interview with Matt Lauer.

“I’ve never agreed with psychiatry, ever,” Cruise said. “Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry, and when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn’t believe in psychology.”

Prior to the Lauer interview, Cruise had taken Brooke Shields to task with accusations that she was “promoting” antidepressants by saying that the medication Paxil helped her deal with postpartum depression.

“As far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you have to understand, I really care about Brooke Shields – she’s a wonderful and talented woman, and I want her to do well, and I know psychiatry is a pseudoscience,” Cruise stated. “The thing that I’m saying about Brooke is that there’s misinformation, okay. And she doesn’t understand the history of psychiatry. She doesn’t understand in the same way that you don’t understand it, Matt.”

“There’s No Such Thing As A Chemical Balance”

Cruise went on to denounce the prescription of Ritalin to children and suggested that “vitamins and exercise” could resolve personal issues.

“Drugs are not the answer,” said Cruise. “I think there’s a better quality of life.”

Shields responded to Cruise’s comments in an interview with People

“I agree with him about his feeling on prescribing drugs to kids. We are in accord,” she said. “I don’t think Ritalin should be prescribed to kids. Postpartum depression is a different matter. I think I’m more qualified to talk about that (than he is).”

According to Shields, Cruise offered her a “heartfelt apology” in 2006 for bringing her into his psychiatric debate.

  • Artie Lange Speaks On Addiction, Legal Troubles In Comeback Tour

Artie Lange Speaks On Addiction, Legal Troubles In Comeback Tour

In the opening show, Lange touched on past relationships, Todd Bridges, and having a brand of heroin named after him.

Comedian Artie Lange is on a stand-up comeback tour after completing rehab and being released in September. During a recent show, he opened up about some of his past experiences with drugs and got real when it came to the addiction disorder that has dogged him for decades.

Lange posted on his Twitter account on September 10 announcing that he was back home and feeling good.

“Great to be home!” he wrote. “7 months 14 days sober but one day at a time. Lots of new stories to tell. Will announce some new tour dates on Friday. Thanks for the support. Love you all.”

The First Stop Of The Tour

Radar Online outlined the most notable moments from the first show of Lange’s tour on October 18, in which the former Howard Stern Show co-host touched on his past relationships, life in prison, and how drugs have affected his life.

“I had three fiancées who left me because of heroin. Heroin saved me a lot of money,” Lange joked. “Divorce would’ve been way more expensive than the drugs.”

Lange was in a relationship with Dana Cironi from 2002 to 2006 and was with Adrienne Ockrymiek from 2009 to 2014.

He also joked about his former use of crack cocaine and “burning bridges.”

“I burned all the bridges you can burn in show business, that’s why I’m in Bridgeport. I was in the crack house recently, I was trying to light a crack pipe and I burned Todd Bridges.”

A fellow actor, Bridges struggled with addiction to crack in his 20s. He entered rehab in 1992 and has been sober ever since.

    They Named Heroin After Him

Later, Lange treated audiences to a story about being sold a bag of heroin that was named after him.

“Here’s the f—ked up thing, on the marquee where I was performing, they had my name spelled wrong. On the bag, it was spelled perfectly!” he said. As funny as it might have been, Lange didn’t feel all that good about the way he was being admired. “My name was on poison dude. Kids are taking this… I guess I am a famous scumbag!”

At the end of the show, Lange got serious, advising his audience to avoid the difficult life that he’s had to struggle through thanks largely to addiction while also showing his appreciation to the fans who have stuck with him through the bad times.

“The fact that you guys come out on a Friday to support me means everything to me. Tell your kids to never touch drugs.”

  • Shia LaBeouf Talks Alcoholism & How His New Theater Company Changed His Life

Shia LaBeouf Talks Alcoholism & How His New Theater Company Changed His Life

The movie star has had a rough few years, but is happier and less lonely with his Slauson R.C. Theater Company.

Actor Shia LaBeouf is happier now that he’s found a community at the Slauson R.C. Theater Company, a performing arts program he co-founded.

His film career has seen the extremes of the creative spectrum, from mainstream blockbusters like Transformers to arthouse flicks like American Honey. His personal life has been a roller coaster as well, garnering national attention for his racist tirade during a public drunkenness arrest.

LaBeouf Says Theater Company Has Given Him A New Lease On Life

But now that LaBeouf has the support of his theater community, he says he’s happier than he’s ever been in his entire life. LaBeouf’s Slauson Rec. initiative is open to anyone with “a story that they’re willing to share” whether or not they are trained or experienced actors. While the pursuit seems wholesome, LeBeouf admits in an interview that his passion for it comes from a place of selfishness.

“I mean look, this isn’t straight altruism and charity work at all. It started in selfishness, it remains in selfishness. This shit is super selfish, it’s not like I’m fucking out here helping the kids, that’s not what’s going on,” he told Dazed Digital. “I’m trying to allow myself some kind of happily-ever-after scenario.”

He also freely admits that the theater company is just another way to chase the high he experienced while drinking.

“A big reason I was such a fucking alcoholic is that when I’m fully absorbed, or lost in something, or immersed in something bigger than myself, it’s a high,” he revealed. “So I drank because it allowed me this freedom for a time from this constant chatter, this self-monitoring of my daily life, right? This fucking anxious self-scrutiny, this non-stop chatter, and I lose that in these workshops when I’m caught up in the work that we’re making as a group. It is a high. I’m chasing a high.”

Things weren’t always rosy for LaBeouf, who garnered negative scrutiny in 2017 after telling a black officer that another black officer was “a black man who arrested me for being white in a city that don’t have nothing to do with none of it.”

LaBeouf Will Portray His Father, Who Battles Alcoholism, In His New Film

In a video of the arrest, LaBeouf belligerently questions why the officers would enforce the law for a president and a police force that “doesn’t give a f— about you.”

“So you wanna arrest, what, white people who give a f— who ask for cigarettes? I came up trying to be nice, you stupid b—,” LaBeouf said on camera, among other things. “I got more millionaire lawyers than you know what to do with, you stupid b—.”

The officers report that the incident began when a stranger refused LaBeouf’s request for a cigarette.

Now, LaBeouf is taking the root of his trauma head-on in the upcoming film, Honey Boy, wherein he plays his own alcoholic father.
