Justin Bieber Used "Heavy Drugs" To Cope With Pressures Of Fame

The pop star got candid on Instagram about his past drug use, mental health and relationships.

Singer-songwriter Justin Bieber recently shared a number of thoughts and feelings in a long Instagram post that covered his unstable childhood, the shock of finding fame at such a young age, the ups and downs of performing, and his past drug use.

The Canadian YouTube singer-turned-teen-sensation admitted that he “started doing pretty heavy drugs at 19” in connection with his chaotic teen years in which he went from being unknown to being beloved by millions.

    Bad Decisions

“As my talent progressed and I became ultra successful it happened within a strand of two years… By 20 I made every bad decision you could have thought of and went from one of the most loved and adored people in the world to the most ridiculed, judged and hated person in the world!” he wrote.

Bieber blames his bad decisions on the pressures that were placed on him at such a young age, when he was still, naturally, “defiant, rebellious, things all of us have to go through.” He also pointed to the common experience of child stars, many who have ended up with substance use issues, legal problems, and/or mental illness.

In 2014, Bieber was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on an expired license and charged with these crimes plus resisting arrest without violence. A toxicology report found THC and Xanax in his system and police claimed he also admitted to having consumed alcohol in addition to the other drugs before driving. He settled for the lesser charge of “misdemeanor careless driving and resisting arrest without violence” and paid a $500 fine, plus a $50,000 contribution to the charity Our Kids.

    Married Life

Today, 25 and recently married to model Hailey Baldwin, Bieber seems to have settled down and is learning from his past mistakes, writing that “humility comes with age.”

“It’s taken me years to bounce back from all of these terrible decisions, fix broken relationships, and change relationship habits,” he said in his Instagram post. “Luckily god blessed me with extraordinary people who love me for me.”

Bieber has spoken in the past about struggling with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety and was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age. In another Instagram post back in March, he asked fans to pray for him as he struggled, saying he was “feeling super disconnected and weird.” However, he remained positive.

“I always bounce back so I’m not worried just wanted to reach out and ask for your [sic] guys to pray for me,” he wrote. “God is faithful and ur prayers really work thanks.”

  • Hailey Baldwin: Mental Health Should Be A Top Priority

Hailey Baldwin: Mental Health Should Be A Top Priority

“There’s a lot of different levels of self-care, like eating right, drinking water and working out. It’s really good for your mentality,” Baldwin said.

Many are concerned about Justin Bieber after he spoke out earlier this month on social media about struggling with depression and asking fans for their prayers.

Now his wife Hailey Baldwin has told People that mental health “should be number one, and it falls to the side a lot.”

As Baldwin explained, “I think there’s more attention on mental health these days, and I see why and get why. I think you have to know what works for you.”

Baldwin also spoke of the benefits of the beach, and she and Bieber spent some time by the ocean while speculation swirled about Bieber’s mental state. Baldwin felt that spending time at the beach can be “grounding. The sound of the ocean, being in the sun – there are so many things that are healthy about the beach to me.”

Baldwin added, “There’s a lot of different levels of self-care, like eating right, drinking water and working out. It’s really good for your mentality.”

While Baldwin wasn’t speaking directly about Bieber’s mental health, a source close to the couple said, “Justin is still receiving treatment, but is doing okay. He is very, very focused on getting better. He wants to be in a great place for his own and Hailey’s sake. He is still confident that he will get there.”

The source added that Baldwin is putting no pressure on Bieber to get better. “She only wants him to focus on his mental health.”

In addition to admitting he was “struggling a lot,” Bieber also wrote on his Instagram post that he’s “just feeling super disconnected and weird.”

But he also showed his determination to get better when he added, “I always bounce back so I’m not worried, just want to reach out and ask for you guys to pray for me. God is faithful and ur prayers really work, thanks…the most human season I’ve ever been in facing my stuff head on.”

Baldwin and Bieber have postponed their plans to have a more formal at the altar wedding while the singer gets help and heals. The source close to the couple concludes that “there are so many people who love and care for him and are helping him deal with what he needs to deal with. Hailey is definitely one of those people.”

  • Justin Bieber Reveals Mental Health Struggles

Justin Bieber Reveals Mental Health Struggles

The recently married pop star took to Instagram to get candid about his mental health with fans.

In an Instagram post on March 10, Justin Bieber told the world that’s he’s experiencing disconnection and feeling “weird.”

Bieber posted on Instagram that he wanted to update his fans on what he’s been going through. “Been struggling a lot. Just feeling super disconnected and weird. I always bounce back so I’m not worried…just wanted to reach out and ask you guys to pray for me. God is faithful and ur prayers really work thanks.. the most human season I’ve ever been in facing my stuff head on…”

Teen Vogue reported that the comment section of Instagram shows Justin’s fans came through with prayers and support. One fan shared that they also experience depression, and: “Love you always and I hope you can find a way to feel better and more like yourself again.” Another Belieber (the fond nickname for the pop star’s fans) told the singer, “We all believe in you!”

Justin has used social media in the past to connect with fans and discuss his mental health. In 2016, he posted that participating in a lot of meet and greets contributed to his depression.

“The pressure of meeting people’s expectations of what I’m supposed to be is so much for me to handle and a lot on my shoulders,” he wrote at the time. “I end up feeling so drained and filled with so much of other people’s spiritual energy that I end up so drained and unhappy.”

Justin’s ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez has also struggled publicly with mental health issues. Selena Gomez and Julia Michaels released a song called “Anxiety” that Selena shared was personal to her.

Justin and those who work for him claim that his current struggles have “nothing to do with Hailey,” but in a recent couple’s interview with Vogue, Hailey and Justin called their marriage “very hard.”

They discussed the strain of being married so young and their struggle to get over things like their initial breakup, and Justin’s past, faster life with random sex and drugs.

The Vogue journalist wrote, “It is impossible not to feel, in Justin’s presence, that he is still recovering from something—the fame whose price was his childhood, the mortification of a thousand magnified adolescent peccadilloes, an accumulated uncertainty about the attentions of those in his orbit—and these scars crowd the surface like his innumerable tattoos.”

  • Justin Bieber Reportedly Getting Treatment For Depression

Justin Bieber Reportedly Getting Treatment For Depression

A source close to Bieber says the singer is “confident he will feel better soon.”

Justin Bieber has been struggling with depression and is seeking treatment, according to sources close to the star. These sources tell Elle that the pop star been “down and tired. He has been struggling a bit.”

Bieber’s career began when he was 13 years old.

“He started off as a typical sweet, Canadian teen,” a source said. “He was such a great kid, honestly super sweet and very polite and nice to everyone around him. Having this huge amount of fame completely changed him. He had access to anything and everything and was surrounded by people who just said ‘Yes.’”

The sources were quick to dispel any allegations that this bout of depression has anything to do with his new marriage to model Hailey Baldwin.

“It has nothing to do with Hailey—he is very happy being married to her,” said the source. “It’s just something else that he struggles with mentally. He has good help around him and is receiving some treatment. He seems confident he will feel better soon.”

Bieber’s grappling with fame from an early age manifested in his acting out, the singer said in a recent interview in Vogue. “I started really feeling myself too much. People love me, I’m the shit—that’s honestly what I thought. I got very arrogant and cocky,” he said. “I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed.”

He gained particular attention when he was arrested in 2014 for a DUI, where he was racing his red Lamborghini in a residential area while drunk. The arresting officers noted Bieber “was not cooperating with the officer’s instructions” and smelled strongly of alcohol.

“At first, he was a little belligerent, using some choice words questioning why he was being stopped and why the officer was even questioning him,” said Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez.

More recently, Bieber has admitted to abusing Xanax to distance himself from his “legitimate problem” with promiscuity.

All this is a result of being in the public eye since he was young, say those close to him.

“He’s emotional and struggles a lot with the idea of fame—being followed, having his every move stalked by fans, cameras in his face,” said the source. “It all sets him off and he often feels like everyone is out to get him.”

Bieber also ended his Purpose tour early last summer, stating that he needed some time for himself.

“I got really depressed on tour,” Bieber told Vogue. “I haven’t talked about this, and I’m still processing so much stuff that I haven’t talked about. I was lonely. I needed some time.”

  • Justin Bieber On Past Xanax Addiction: "It Got Pretty Dark"

Justin Bieber On Past Xanax Addiction: "It Got Pretty Dark"

“I think there were times when my security was coming in late at night to check my pulse and see if I was still breathing,” Bieber told Vogue.

Justin Bieber spoke frankly about his past struggles with substance use in a far-ranging cover story for the March 2019 issue of Vogue.

The pop singer said that his “super-promiscuous” behavior led to using Xanax as a means of “put[ting] a screen” between him and his actions. Bieber said that his faith helped him not only gain sobriety but also brought him to model Hailey Baldwin, whom he married in September 2018. “I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result,” he told Vogue.

In the interview – his first full-length conversation with the media in more than two years, according to Entertainment Tonight – Bieber said that his Xanax use was spawned in part from his meteoric rise to fame.

“I was real at first,” he recalled. “And then I was manufactured, as, slowly, they just took more and more control.”

Bieber took his stardom as proof of his own infallibility, and “got very arrogant and cocky.”

“I was wearing sunglasses inside,” he explained.

Bieber indulged heavily in the pop/rock lifestyle, which manifested itself in “doing things that I was so ashamed of” – namely, a penchant for promiscuity that he numbed through Xanax use. “My mom always said treat women with respect,” he said. “For me, that was always in my head while I was doing it, so I could never enjoy it.”

Eventually, Bieber found that he had a “legitimate problem” with sex that was borne from the clash between his values and the emptiness he felt about his stardom. “I think sex can cause a lot of pain,” he said. “Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth.”

The drug use, too, contributed to Bieber feeling unmoored and out of control. “Drugs put a screen between me and what I was doing,” he explained. “It got pretty dark. I think there were times when my security was coming in late at night to check my pulse and see if I was still breathing.”

Bieber eventually found help through a detox in 2014, and has remained abstinent from drugs since then without the lack of outside assistance. “To do it without a program, and to stick with it without a sober coach or AA classes – I think he’s extraordinary,” said Baldwin about her new spouse.

As for his intimacy issues, Bieber said that he stayed celibate prior to meeting Baldwin in order to “rededicate myself to God in that way, because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul.”

Now that the couple are married, Bieber feels that “God blessed me with Hailey as a result [of his abstinence]. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior.”
