Lamar Odom Discusses How Ketamine Saved His Mental Health

The basketball star spoke in an interview about how the notorious club drug helped him.

Former NBA star Lamar Odom owes his mental health to ketamine, according to his interview on People’s Party with Talib Kweli.

Odom hit headlines after his close brush with death the night he visited a Nevada brothel and suffered 12 strokes and six heart attacks. Following the incident, the NBA player claimed that the brothel owner, Dennis Hof, was trying to kill him.

“I think Dennis Hof… I don’t know what he had against me, but I didn’t do drugs that night, to be honest with you,” Odom, 39, said on The View in May. “So I don’t know if he tried to poison me, or… I don’t know what he had against me. He tried to kill me.”

However Odom did own up to suffering from addiction and mental health issues, which he discussed on Talib Kweli’s show. He spoke on how these issues affected black men as well as how he himself has found help through the power of ketamine.

“It can help with addiction, any falsehoods you have that’s holding you back in life,” said Odom.

Many may know ketamine as the party drug called Special K, but the stuff has proven to be a mighty clinical tool in combating depression. Researchers have been able to detect changes in the brain circuitry of depressed mice in just three hours.

“It’s a remarkable engineering feat, where they were able to visualize changes in neural circuits over time, corresponding with behavioral effects of ketamine,” said Carlos Zarate of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

These antidepressant effects are observed at lower doses than in recreational use as well as the doses used for anesthetic purposes, ketamine’s original use. It also seems to be more effective than traditional depression medications.

“About 70 to 85 percent of patients with severe depression who try ketamine treatment say it’s effective, compared with 58 to 70 percent of ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) patients,” said health journalist Alice Levitt.

The only downside researchers noted about ketamine is that its antidepressant effects are temporary, lasting just a few weeks or months. However, they noted that with more examination into the actual physical changes that ketamine induced in the brain, we may yet have a more permanent treatment for depression.

Lamar Odom: I Didn’t Overdose, Brothel Owner Tried To Kill Me

“I think Dennis Hof… I don’t know what he had against me, but I didn’t do drugs that night, to be honest with you,” Odom said on The View this week.

Former NBA star Lamar Odom said that he did not overdose on drugs back in 2015 during a trip to a legal brothel in Nevada, but that the brothel owner Dennis Hof tried to kill him.

“I think Dennis Hof… I don’t know what he had against me, but I didn’t do drugs that night, to be honest with you,” Odom, 39, said on The View this week. “So I don’t know if he tried to poison me, or… I don’t know what he had against me. He tried to kill me.”

Odom said that his lawyer had found workers at the brothel who agreed this was the case. He said that he hasn’t pressed the issue, despite the media frenzy over his apparent near-fatal overdose.

“He almost succeeded [in killing me], though. I didn’t [take drugs that night],” Odom said. “I’ve been at odds with my daughter [Destiny] about this. She’s like, ‘Leave it alone.’ I would like to clear my name.”

Hof died of a heart attack last year at the age of 72, so he is unable to respond to the allegations. When he was asked by TMZ what Hof’s motive might have been, Odom had no explanation. “I would like to ask him that question, too. I don’t know,” Odom said. “That’s a question I asked myself when I was waking up.”

Odom was going through a divorce with reality television star Khloe Kardashian at the time of the overdose. Kardashian paused their divorce proceedings and supported him through his recovery.

“He OD’s during the divorce and I was his next of kin, even though it was still—the divorce was still—it was on the judge’s desk. It was like two years, or like a year or two, of us trying to get the divorce going and then this happened,” Kardashian said on the podcast Divorce Sucks With Laura Wasser earlier this month. “We paused the divorce, not for any romantic reasons but I wanted to be able to take care of him and make sure that he would be okay again.”

Odom recently wrote a book in which he seems to take more responsibility for his behavior during that period.

“I could not handle the lethal cocktail of the spotlight, addiction, a diminishing career and infidelity,” he wrote in his memoir. “Oh, did I mention the anxiety, depression… I couldn’t keep my dick in my pants or the coke out of my nose. Drug addicts are incredibly skilled at hiding their habit.”

Khloe Kardashian Reflects On Lamar Odom’s Overdose

Kardashian detailed why she “paused” their divorce proceedings and Odom’s first words when he woke up from his coma.

Khloe Kardashian recently appeared on divorce lawyer Laura Wasser’s podcast to discuss her relationship with ex-husband, NBA All-Star Lamar Odom, and her feelings about almost losing him to a near-fatal overdose in 2015.

Odom and Kardashian were in the process of getting a divorce when Lamar overdosed at a Las Vegas brothel in October 2015. Kardashian was by his side at the hospital until he finally came back from the brink of death.

Kardashian said on the podcast, Divorce Sucks With Laura Wasser, “He OD’s during the divorce and I was his next of kin, even though it was still—the divorce was still—it was on the judge’s desk. It was like two years, or like a year or two, of us trying to get the divorce going and then this happened.”

Once Odom wound up in the hospital, Kardashian says, “We paused the divorce, not for any romantic reasons but I wanted to be able to take care of him and make sure that he would be okay again.”

Odom was in a coma for four days, and when he finally awoke, he saw Khloe and said, “Hey babe.”

“I was like, ‘Oh God. What year does he think this is?’” Khloe recalls today. “I remember I was like, ‘Oh no. What did I do?!’ Because I was like, ‘Does he know?’ And then he went right back to sleep because he was in a coma, woke up, saw me and I might’ve put him back into a coma, I don’t know, he probably was terrified.”

As People reports, Odom has written a new memoir, Darkness to Light, where he candidly looked back on his marriage to Kardashian and his addiction to cocaine. Odom confessed, “I wish I could have been more of a man. It still bothers me to this day.”

In his book, Odom confessed, “I could not handle the lethal cocktail of the spotlight, addiction, a diminishing career and infidelity. Oh, did I mention the anxiety, depression… I couldn’t keep my dick in my pants or the cocaine in my nose. Drug addicts are incredibly skilled at hiding their habit.”
