Whitney Houston First Tried Cocaine At 14, Best Friend Says

“She admired that I could stop. She said, ‘I’m going to stop but I’m just not ready yet.’”

There has been much speculation about the inception of Whitney Houston’s drug use. Many blame her husband pop star Bobby Brown for introducing her to drugs but the “Every Little Step” singer emphatically denies introducing his wife of 14 years to drugs.

“It wasn’t me that started her [on drugs],” he told Robin Roberts in an emotional 20/20 interview in 2016.

Houston’s best friend and alleged lover Robyn Crawford appears to back-up Brown’s denial in her recently released a memoir titled A Song For You: My Life with Whitney Houston which details their relationship as well as Whitney’s turbulent and prolific relationship with cocaine.

    Romantic Rumors

In the book, Crawford says the “I Will Always Love You” singer admitted that she had first tried cocaine when she was 14 years old. Crawford first met Houston when they were teens and they became fast friends…and then more.

For years, romantic rumors swirled around the duo but were often kiboshed by those in Whitney’s camp, including her mother, Cissy Houston. In A Song For You, Crawford laid those tumors to rest by confirming that the two were romantically involved.

“Whitney told me her mother said it wasn’t natural for two women to be that close,” Crawford wrote, “but we were that close.”

According to Crawford the pair “never talked about labels, like lesbian or gay. We just lived our lives and I hoped it could go on that way forever.”

When Whitney began pursuing her music career, Crawford was by her side as her personal assistant though they had to end the physical aspects of their relationship due to pressure from Whitney’s team about how their queer relationship could possibly derail her budding career.

    Cocaine In The Spotlight

As the singer’s career began to take off in the 80s, she noted that the drug use could be a problem as she ascended the heights of stardom.

“Whitney would often say ‘Cocaine can’t go where we’re going.’ [But] we weren’t ready to give it up quite yet,” Crawford wrote.

Success came in waves for the talented singer but she continued to use. Crawford says she warned Whitney, “I’d say, ‘Nip [Whitney’s nickname]  we’re here already. And it’s [cocaine] still here. It shouldn’t be.’ And she’d say ‘I know, I’m going to stop.’”

    But Houston didn’t stop.

“She admired that I could stop. She said, ‘I’m going to stop but I’m just not ready yet.’”

And the drug use continued and escalated. Crawford put an end to her imbibing but the pressures of fame helped push Houston deeper into addiction

After being the legendary singer’s personal assistant throughout her career, Crawford decided it was time to hang up her hat and extricate herself from the situation in 2000.

“I had done all I could do,” she wrote, according to People.“and for the first time I realized that I needed to save myself.”

After Houston’s death, Crawford confronted the late singer’s agent about sending her out on tour while she was in the midst of a harrowing addiction to cocaine.

“She said to me, ‘Because she and her daughter would have been out on the street. And my response was, ‘Is that what you guys have been telling her?’”

Crawford assumed that there would be time for them to reunite after her departure but in 2012, Houston passed away from an accidental drowning at 48.

“I thought we had time but in an odd way, Whitney was waiting for me and I was waiting for her,” she noted. “I owe it to my friend to share her story, my story. Our story. And I hope that in doing so, I can set us both free.”

  • Beach Boys Singer: Trump Tried To Help Whitney Houston Get Sober

Beach Boys Singer: Trump Tried To Help Whitney Houston Get Sober

“You tried your best to help Whitney. And she’s not the only one you benefited and tried [to help],” said Beach Boys’ Mike Love at a White House event.

When the late Whitney Houston was in the depths of her addiction, a few of her famous friends reached out and tried to help, like Clive Davis, the legendary label executive who signed her, and Kevin Costner, her Bodyguard co-star.

And according to Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love, even Donald Trump offered to help during her time of need.

As AOL reports, Love made this claim at a White House event celebrating the passing of the Music Modernization Act, which will revamp music licensing and royalties.

At the podium, Love addressed the President: “People can say what they want, but you’ve always been a big supporter of some of the best music America ever made. I remember you tried your best to get Whitney Houston in some kind of shape.”

Love then said that Trump and billionaire Revlon executive Ron Perelman tried to get Houston to see the light at an apparent intervention at Mar-a-Lago. “You tried your best to help Whitney. And she’s not the only one you benefited and tried [to help].”

Trump and Houston were friendly in the past. Trump revealed on The Wendy Williams Show that he was a guest at Houston’s wedding to Bobby Brown and claimed the singer was a frequent guest at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump said Houston sang for him “many times,” and he was heartbroken when her vocal abilities went downhill from drugs and alcohol.

“It was very said,” Trump said. “It was certainly a different person in terms of that incredible voice, which was the best I’d heard.”

Trump felt Brown enabled her, adding, “It was just not a marriage made in heaven. It was bad for her –very bad for her. She was trying desperately to make a comeback,” yet her efforts were a “tough go.”

Years ago, in an interview with Billy Bush ironically enough, he also blamed the media for enabling the singer. “When you’re a celebrity and a super-celebrity, people sort of do whatever you want to do. They don’t tell you what’s right and what’s wrong. You see with Michael [Jackson] with the drugs – so many people – probably Whitney. You can show up in terrible shape, and they’ll tell you how great you look.”

Right after Houston’s passing, Trump told Headline News that Houston “had demons like anyone had demons…the drugs were a problem. Something was missing. She needed help. She was crying out for help. And the end result was what happened the other day in L.A.”

  • Friend Who Found Bobbi Kristina Brown in Tub Dies from Apparent Overdose

Friend Who Found Bobbi Kristina Brown in Tub Dies from Apparent Overdose

Prior to his death, Max Lomas had successfully completed three months in a rehab facility and had recently found a job.

Max Lomas, who gained notoriety after finding the late Bobbi Kristina Brown unconscious in a bathtub in 2015, has died from what has been described as a “probable” drug overdose.

The 28-year-old, who lived with Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s daughter before her drug-related death in 2015, was found unresponsive, with a syringe by his side in the bathroom of a home in Saltillo, Mississippi on August 15, 2018. Lomas was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to People, a cause of death has not been determined, but death investigation papers obtained by the publication list heroin overdose as the probable cause of death.

People noted that prior to his death, Lomas had successfully completed three months in a rehabilitation facility and had recently found a job.

“He really worked the program,” said a source close to Lomas, who reportedly spoke to him on a weekly basis while he was in treatment. “He had come so far. There was so much he wanted to do.”

Lomas had been taken in by Whitney Houston as a teenager, and was briefly linked to Bobbi Kristina Brown before the relationship came to a halt when he was incarcerated in 2011 for violating his probation.

Upon his release, he found that Brown was dating Nick Gordon, and the trio soon began living together as roommates in Roswell, Georgia. By Lomas’ account, he and the couple were “pretty bad into drugs,” and Gordon and Brown fought on a regular basis, “mostly about jealousy.”

Lomas also claimed that Gordon was abusive towards Brown, a statement that has been decried by Gordon’s lawyers.

On January 31, 2015, Lomas found Brown floating face down in a bathtub in the trio’s townhouse. “I saw the color of her face and that she wasn’t breathing. I called for Nick and called 911,” he stated.

Gordon was subsequently blamed for Brown’s death by her family, who served him with a $40 million civil lawsuit over the alleged abuse. In 2016, he was found liable for Brown’s death and ordered to pay $36 million to her estate.

As People noted, no charges were filed against Lomas, who told the publication in 2016 that he was sober and no longer friends with Gordon.

“I’m in utter disbelief because I knew he had gone and gotten help in Mississippi,” said Garry Grace, a friend of both Lomas and Gordon, to People on August 17. “I didn’t have to worry about him because I knew he was safe.”
