Amanda Bynes Checks Into Sober Living Following Alleged Relapse

The former child star checked into a mental health facility earlier this year for a stress-related relapse.

Amanda Bynes is reportedly living in a sober group facility after an alleged relapse.

According to The Blast, the actress was advised to check into the group home by both her family and doctors, claiming they felt it was “the best place” for her to be.

Sources tell The Blast that there have been several signs pointing to a shift in Bynes’ mental space, such as increased Instagram activity and dying her hair bright pink.

    Conservatorship Hearing

The actress recently made an appearance in Ventura County Court in relation to her conservatorship case. The conservatorship has been in place since 2014, when Bynes nearly lit her dog on fire.

Entering treatment for her mental health is not new for Bynes, who has been in and out of such facilities since 2012. She has also been sober for varying amounts of time—at one point for four years

In April 2019, Bynes’ attorney Tamar Arminak announced that Bynes had chosen to return to treatment on her own.

“I will tell you she’s doing remarkably well, under the circumstances,” he said at the time. “This time around, she realized herself, after the PAPER magazine interview spread, that she really wasn’t feeling like herself all of [a] sudden. She wanted to address it right away before going back into show business and exploring show business again. And it was her decision and her choice to address the situation, seek treatment, which I think is an incredibly mature way of handling this type of thing.”

    Graduating From FIDM

A few months later, Bynes was allowed to leave treatment in order to walk at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising’s graduation ceremony, where she received her bachelor’s degree. She then returned to the treatment facility.

Bynes has been open about her struggles in the past. In November 2018, Bynes spoke to PAPER magazine about her history with substance use disorder. She said she first tried marijuana when she was 16, then delved into harder drugs.

“Later on it progressed to doing molly and ecstasy,” she said at the time. “[I tried] cocaine three times but I never got high from cocaine. I never liked it. It was never my drug of choice.”

Bynes said she also abused Adderall, noting she “got really into my drug usage and it became a really dark, sad world for me.”

She added that she’s grateful her drug use never went further and warned others against going down a similar path.

“There are gateway drugs and thankfully I never did heroin or meth or anything like that but certain things that you think are harmless, they may actually affect you in a more harmful way,” Bynes told the magazine. “Be really, really careful because you could lose it all and ruin your entire life like I did.”

  • Amanda Bynes Returns To Inpatient Treatment After College Graduation

Amanda Bynes Returns To Inpatient Treatment After College Graduation

Bynes has been working on developing a career in fashion since she retired from acting in 2010.

Amanda Bynes is currently still living in an inpatient care facility for her mental health as she’s taking the next steps in her life and career, an unnamed source told People.

In late June, the actress and fashion designer walked in her graduation ceremony from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising before returning to the facility.

“Amanda is still inpatient in a mental health facility,” said a friend of Bynes. “She was able to get an outing pass for a few hours for the special occasion so she could walk with the other students. But she left a little early and was back at the facility at the end of the graduation.”

Bynes has struggled with mental illness and addiction for several years.

In 2012, she was charged with a DUI, though the charge was dropped two years later. In 2013, she was put under a 72-hour mental-health evaluation hold in a mental health facility after she allegedly started a small fire in a stranger’s driveway. Since then, her parents have repeatedly filed for and been granted conservatorship over Bynes due to her illness.

In 2018, Bynes publicly announced that she had been sober for four years after struggling with substance use disorder, particularly with Adderall.

    Getting Help

In addition to working on getting sober and improving her mental health, Bynes has been working on developing a career in fashion since she retired from acting in 2010. She enrolled at the Fashion Institute in 2014 and received her associate’s degree in Merchandise Product Development last year, and her bachelor’s this year.

Earlier this year, the Bynes family attorney Tamar Arminak told People that Amanda has been doing well in the inpatient program.

“Amanda is doing great, working on herself, and taking some well-deserved time off to focus on her wellbeing after graduating FIDM in December,” he said. “She’s spending time reading and exercising, sketching for her new line and mostly making sure this time around she puts her needs first.”

    A Rare Photo

Bynes even posted a rare photo of herself on her Twitter account—one of only 11 tweets on an account that has nearly three million followers. The photo shows her posing in cap and gown with a friend dressed in a leopard print vest and tie.

Amanda unfortunately suffered a relapse in March after she attempted to return to acting. She has had difficulties in the past with seeing herself on screen and hating how she looked.

“I literally couldn’t stand my appearance in that movie and I didn’t like my performance. I was absolutely convinced I needed to stop acting after seeing it,” she said of her 2010 movie Easy A.

  • Amanda Bynes Back in Rehab Following Relapse

Amanda Bynes Back in Rehab Following Relapse

The former child actor had returned to the limelight in 2018 after a prolonged absence during which she became sober.

Amanda Bynes is back in rehab after a relapse, according to sources close to the star. Bynes seemed to be getting her life back together after spending years in tabloid pages for her drug-fueled behavior, but a source revealed to PEOPLE that Bynes has been in rehab since January.

The source said trouble started brewing for Bynes around the end of last year as geared up for a return to her acting career. Then sober and taking classes at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles, Bynes spoke openly about her struggles with mental health to Paper magazine.

Bynes found fame as a teenage star on Nickelodeon before landing starring roles in several movies like Big Fat Liar, What a Girl Wants, and She’s the Man. However, seeing herself on screen took a toll on her self-image, especially in 2006’s She’s the Man in which she disguises herself as her brother to play soccer.

“When the movie came out and I saw it, I went into a deep depression for 4-6 months because I didn’t like how I looked when I was a boy,” she confessed.

Her feelings didn’t change in her 2010 appearance in Easy A.

“I literally couldn’t stand my appearance in that movie and I didn’t like my performance. I was absolutely convinced I needed to stop acting after seeing it,” she said.

To deal with these feelings, she turned to drugs. Not liking the taste of alcohol, she turned to marijuana when she was 16 years old.

“Even though everyone thought I was the ‘good girl,’ I did smoke marijuana from that point on,” she recounted. “Later on it progressed to doing molly and ecstasy. [I tried] cocaine three times but I never got high from cocaine. I never liked it. It was never my drug of choice.”

She also admitted to abusing Adderall, regularly waking and baking, and spiraling out of control. But she was able to get better, still optimistic and talking of living fearlessly as recently as last November.

“I think that’s kind of how I go about [life] now—like, what’s there to lose? I have no fear of the future,” she said. “I’ve been through the worst and came out the other end and survived it so I just feel like it’s only up from here.”

  • Amanda Bynes Talks Being Four Years Sober, Reflects On Past Drug Use

Amanda Bynes Talks Being Four Years Sober, Reflects On Past Drug Use

Amanda Bynes credits her parents with helping her “get back on track” after her past issues with problematic drug use.

Amanda Bynes is moving on from her past. The actress, now 32, was a popular target of the paparazzi during her twenties, racking up DUIs and a reputation for drug abuse and bizarre behavior.

But she’s now sober and studying at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles.

In a new interview with Paper magazine, the former Nickelodeon star relives her hectic past.

As a child, Bynes landed a place on the Nickelodeon sketch comedy show All That, alongside Kenan Thompson and Nick Cannon, and quickly became a fixture of the network. As a teenager, Bynes appeared in films like Big Fat Liar, What a Girl Wants, and She’s the Man.

Despite her success, Bynes began having issues with her self-image. She recalled being thrown “into a funk” after seeing herself in She’s the Man. In this 2006 film, Bynes plays a teenage girl who disguises herself as her brother in order to play on the boy’s soccer team. “When the movie came out and I saw it, I went into a deep depression for 4-6 months because I didn’t like how I looked when I was a boy,” she said.

Still, she continued to churn out hits on the big screen like Hairspray (2007) and Easy A (2010). But she couldn’t shake her self-image issues. While watching herself at a screening of Easy A, Bynes said, “I literally couldn’t stand my appearance in that movie and I didn’t like my performance. I was absolutely convinced I needed to stop acting after seeing it.”

Bynes “never liked the taste of alcohol” and “never really liked going out that much. I [only] started going out around 25 years old,” she said.

While she couldn’t stomach alcohol, Bynes did start using marijuana when she was 16. “Even though everyone thought I was the ‘good girl,’ I did smoke marijuana from that point on.”

However, this progressed to molly, ecstasy and Adderall. The combination of drugs that she was abusing did not agree with her.

Bynes announced that she was retiring from acting, and found herself out of work with not much to do. “I just had no purpose in life. I’d been working my whole life and [now] I was doing nothing. I had a lot of time on my hands and I would ‘wake and bake’ and literally be stoned all day long,” she said.

This cycle of being “just stuck at home, getting high, watching TV and tweeting,” eventually spiraled out of control. Bynes began “hanging out with a seedier crowd and I isolated a lot… I got really into my drug usage and it became a really dark, sad world for me.”

She explained that her bizarre behavior was truly “drug-induced, and whenever I got off of [drugs], I was always back to normal.”

Bynes, with her past behind her, is now looking forward to earning her fashion degree and returning to acting. “I’ve been sober for almost four years now.” She credits her parents with “really helping me get back on track.”

“Those days of experimenting [with substances] are long over. I’m not sad about it and I don’t miss it because I really feel ashamed of how those substances made me act,” she said.

With everything she has been through, magnified by the relentless pursuit of the paparazzi, Bynes says she’s now able to live fearlessly.

“I think that’s kind of how I go about [life] now—like, what’s there to lose? I have no fear of the future. I’ve been through the worst and came out the other end and survived it so I just feel like it’s only up from here.”
