  • Whitney Houston First Tried Cocaine At 14, Best Friend Says

Whitney Houston First Tried Cocaine At 14, Best Friend Says

“She admired that I could stop. She said, ‘I’m going to stop but I’m just not ready yet.’”

There has been much speculation about the inception of Whitney Houston’s drug use. Many blame her husband pop star Bobby Brown for introducing her to drugs but the “Every Little Step” singer emphatically denies introducing his wife of 14 years to drugs.

“It wasn’t me that started her [on drugs],” he told Robin Roberts in an emotional 20/20 interview in 2016.

Houston’s best friend and alleged lover Robyn Crawford appears to back-up Brown’s denial in her recently released a memoir titled A Song For You: My Life with Whitney Houston which details their relationship as well as Whitney’s turbulent and prolific relationship with cocaine.

    Romantic Rumors

In the book, Crawford says the “I Will Always Love You” singer admitted that she had first tried cocaine when she was 14 years old. Crawford first met Houston when they were teens and they became fast friends…and then more.

For years, romantic rumors swirled around the duo but were often kiboshed by those in Whitney’s camp, including her mother, Cissy Houston. In A Song For You, Crawford laid those tumors to rest by confirming that the two were romantically involved.

“Whitney told me her mother said it wasn’t natural for two women to be that close,” Crawford wrote, “but we were that close.”

According to Crawford the pair “never talked about labels, like lesbian or gay. We just lived our lives and I hoped it could go on that way forever.”

When Whitney began pursuing her music career, Crawford was by her side as her personal assistant though they had to end the physical aspects of their relationship due to pressure from Whitney’s team about how their queer relationship could possibly derail her budding career.

    Cocaine In The Spotlight

As the singer’s career began to take off in the 80s, she noted that the drug use could be a problem as she ascended the heights of stardom.

“Whitney would often say ‘Cocaine can’t go where we’re going.’ [But] we weren’t ready to give it up quite yet,” Crawford wrote.

Success came in waves for the talented singer but she continued to use. Crawford says she warned Whitney, “I’d say, ‘Nip [Whitney’s nickname]  we’re here already. And it’s [cocaine] still here. It shouldn’t be.’ And she’d say ‘I know, I’m going to stop.’”

    But Houston didn’t stop.

“She admired that I could stop. She said, ‘I’m going to stop but I’m just not ready yet.’”

And the drug use continued and escalated. Crawford put an end to her imbibing but the pressures of fame helped push Houston deeper into addiction

After being the legendary singer’s personal assistant throughout her career, Crawford decided it was time to hang up her hat and extricate herself from the situation in 2000.

“I had done all I could do,” she wrote, according to People.“and for the first time I realized that I needed to save myself.”

After Houston’s death, Crawford confronted the late singer’s agent about sending her out on tour while she was in the midst of a harrowing addiction to cocaine.

“She said to me, ‘Because she and her daughter would have been out on the street. And my response was, ‘Is that what you guys have been telling her?’”

Crawford assumed that there would be time for them to reunite after her departure but in 2012, Houston passed away from an accidental drowning at 48.

“I thought we had time but in an odd way, Whitney was waiting for me and I was waiting for her,” she noted. “I owe it to my friend to share her story, my story. Our story. And I hope that in doing so, I can set us both free.”

  • Ben Affleck Addresses Recent Relapse, Says It Won't "Derail Him"

Ben Affleck Addresses Recent Relapse, Says It Won't "Derail Him"

Affleck was spotted imbibing at a Halloween party this past weekend.

Actor Ben Affleck, who has struggled with alcohol addiction since the mid-1990s, looked to be inebriated after a Hollywood Halloween party on Saturday, according to video obtained by TMZ.

The video shows him stumbling a bit after posing for a photo, then nearly falling backward and grabbing an idle SUV for support. He then carefully gets into his own vehicle as the cameraman asks him how he’s been.

    Talking To The Paps

The next day, Affleck was seen looking no worse for wear and admitted on camera that he had “slipped” but that he’s not going to let that stop him.

“It happens. It was a slip but I’m not going to let it derail me,” Affleck told paparazzi. “Thank you very much, guys.”

According to a “friend” who spoke to People, the actor has acknowledged that his recovery is not going to be a perfect journey.

“Sobriety is difficult and elusive for everyone struggling with addiction,” the source said. “Ben has acknowledged he’s going to slip up from time to time. It was never as if this was simply behind him.”

    The Midnight Mission

Earlier Saturday, Affleck posted on his Instagram promoting The Midnight Mission, a non-profit organization that helps people experiencing homelessness with services like job training, housing, and addiction treatment.

In his post, the actor mentioned being sober for over a year and announced that he would be donating to the non-profit while encouraging his followers to do the same.

“I have been in recovery for over a year and part of that is helping out others,” he wrote. “@themidnightmission is an incredible organization that helps those in need with housing, training, development and recovery. I’m making a donation today because there are people battling addiction every day that don’t have the resources and need help.”

    His Third Rehab Stay

Affleck was most recently in rehab for his issues with alcohol from late August to early October 2018, which was his third time staying in a facility for addiction treatment. After his 40-day program last year, he posted a statement to his fans explaining that treating an addiction disorder is a lifetime journey.

“Battling any addiction is a lifelong and difficult struggle,” he said. “Because of that, one is never really in or out of treatment. It is full-time commitment. I am fighting for myself and my family.”

This July, Affleck credited the treatment center Refuge Recovery for his progress and health in a defense of founder Noah Levine, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple individuals.

“Working with Noah and his Refuge Recovery program has, quite literally, turned my life around,” said Affleck. “Today I am sober, happy, healthy and have custody of my three children. All of those things are a result of having Noah in my life.”

  • Michael Douglas Relieved To Have Son Back After Long Addiction Battle

Michael Douglas Relieved To Have Son Back After Long Addiction Battle

Cameron will soon be releasing a memoir about his decades-long struggle with addiction to cocaine and heroin.

Michael Douglas spoke to People this week about his son Cameron’s long battle with addiction and his six-year stay in prison.

The 75-year-old actor, who recently appeared in Avengers: Endgame, addressed the fear of losing his child and the cautious relief he has felt since Cameron returned to acting in 2017.

“There were moments when hope dwindled… and then it’s just a train out of the station,” said Michael. “You go from compassion for somebody you love and worry about and you balance that with your own hostility and anger as it begins to increase… I remember him looking at me and I said, ‘Listen, you know I love you but I am going to protect myself and the family.’”

    Losing His Half-Brother To Overdose

Michael knows the pain of losing a family member to addiction, having lost his half-brother Eric to an overdose in 2004. Eric was only 46 when his maid found him dead in his Manhattan apartment. Toxicology reports found that he overdosed on a mix of alcohol, tranquilizers, and painkillers.

However, after a lot of personal work and some time in a halfway house, Cameron has remained sober and hope has returned to the family.

“It went from feeling [cautious] to relief, to the joy of having Cameron back,” Michael told People. “It’s like this huge storm has passed and the sun came out and you can enjoy your life again without looking over your back. It’s a wonderful feeling of being complete.”

    Long Way Home

Cameron will soon be releasing a memoir about his decades-long struggle with addiction to cocaine and heroin titled Long Way Home. He also appeared in the short film Dead Layer in 2018, but he’s mostly been enjoying forming a closer bond with his father as well as his 22-month-old daughter Lua.

He hopes that his book will inspire others struggling with addiction to get help and that he might even “save a life.”

“It’s the sneaky power, the stranglehold that addiction has when you’re in the throes of it,” he said of his disease. “When you get that far down the rabbit hole, there are a couple options: there’s prison and then there’s death.”

Michael expressed his pride in his son for sticking with the treatment program and passing his story on to others.

“I’m very proud of him, not only for the book but for the way he conducts his life,” he said. “He’s talking the talk and walking the walk.”

  • Demi Lovato In Mourning After Friend's Death: "Addiction Is No Joke"

Demi Lovato In Mourning After Friend's Death: "Addiction Is No Joke"

An overdose survivor herself, the singer also encouraged her fans to seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with a substance use disorder.

Demi Lovato posted a tribute to her friend Thomas last Wednesday after he passed away following a long struggle with addiction. The “Sober” singer revealed on her Instagram Stories that she was “devastated” by her friend’s death, sharing a black-and-white photo of the young man.

“Please hold your loved ones tight. Tell them they are special and that you love them,” she wrote. “Make sure they know it. RIP to my boo @sirtruss.”

An overdose survivor herself, the singer also encouraged her fans to seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with a substance use disorder.

“Addiction is NO joke,” she said. “Heaven gained this beautiful angel last night because of that terrible disease. I’m crushed and will always miss you @sirtruss. If you or someone you know is struggling please know it’s okay to ask for help.”

    Sharing Her Own Addiction Struggles

Lovato suffered a near-fatal overdose in July 2018 after years of struggling with addiction, bipolar disorder and an eating disorder. She spoke out on these issues and her overdose on social media in the following month, thanking her fans for standing by her while she fought to regain her health.

“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet,” Lovato wrote in an Instagram post. “The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side. I will keep fighting.”

Living With Bulimia & Bipolar Disorder

Around the one-year anniversary of her overdose, sources close to Lovato reported to People that she was doing well, focusing on her health and spending time with friends. This was just months after she blasted reporters for commenting on her “fuller figure” in spite of the fact that she had been previously open about her struggles with disordered eating.

“I AM MORE THAN MY WEIGHT,” she wrote alongside a screenshot of the article.

In August, it was revealed that Lovato will be returning to acting as part of the cast of Eurovision, a Netflix original movie and comedy centered around the European song competition. She will also have a guest role on the final season of Will & Grace. At the same time, she dropped hints that she’s working on her music and a new album is on the way.

  • Andie MacDowell Details How Her Mother's Alcoholism Affected Her Life

Andie MacDowell Details How Her Mother's Alcoholism Affected Her Life

“I think I’ve felt responsible all my life. But I’m good at it. I’ve been in training for a long time,” MacDowell said.

Actress and fashion model Andie MacDowell spoke on growing up with a mother who was addicted to alcohol and how that affected her own desire to consume intoxicating substances in a recent interview with The Guardian.

The 61-year-old star of film classics such as Groundhog Day and Sex, Lies, and Videotape recalls being a young model in New York and being introduced to cocaine. Thankfully, she was not a fan.

Cocaine Was Ubiquitous In Her Modeling Days

“There was a lot of cocaine around,” she said. “I had a small experience at the very beginning and hated it. I hated it! It was only, like, a month. I really didn’t like the way it felt. It didn’t make me feel good and I couldn’t sleep.”

The use of cocaine among models at the time was so common, and sober individuals so rare, that MacDowell almost ended her career at age 21, telling her agency that she wanted to go home. Instead, they introduced her to champagne heir Olivier Chandon de Brailles, who also didn’t care for drugs and alcohol, and the two started dating.

“I don’t know if they prearranged the whole thing, but it sure did work out well for me. I started working non-stop and my whole life opened up.”

As A Young Child, She Took Care Of Her Mom

MacDowell’s distaste for drugs and alcohol began at a young age, as she watched her mother, Paula Johnston, struggle with alcohol addiction. According to the actress, she would often wake up late at night to check to make sure her mom’s last cigarette was out all the way.

“There was this old-fashioned can opener attached to the wall and she’d be in the kitchen drinking and I’d clean the oil off the can opener and talk to her and ask: ‘Why do you drink?’” she remembered.

“There were burn marks all over the floor and on the couch; it’s amazing we didn’t burn down,” she recalled. “That’s a lot of responsibility for a child, I say. I think I’ve felt responsible all my life. But I’m good at it. I’ve been in training for a long time.”

However, she says she “always felt loved” and that she and her mother had a good relationship.

At age 17, MacDowell appealed to doctors for help with addiction treatment, but options were limited. One doctor’s decision to prescribe Valium only made the problem worse.

“That was a bad decision because then I couldn’t communicate with her,” she said. “And I communicated really well with her.”

Her mother did finally get to a better place just one year before she died of a heart attack at age 53.

“She said she had quit drinking and that she was so proud of me. That was the last year of her life and I didn’t really get to be around it, which was super sad.”

As a mother of three herself, MacDowell was fine with her daughters getting into the acting business in spite of the not-so-hidden drug culture within, trusting that they are as disinterested in that kind of lifestyle as she is.

“We’re really kind of boring people. We barely want to go out… I’m a home body and I do yoga and I hike, that’s kind of it. No drugs and rock and roll!”

  • Aaron Carter Is Two Years Sober, But Urging His Mom Into Treatment

Aaron Carter Is Two Years Sober, But Urging His Mom Into Treatment

Carter announced that he is canceling part of his tour to focus on his mental health and family.

Shortly after revealing that he lives with a host of mental health issues, pop singer Aaron Carter has canceled much of his tour to focus on his mental health and family issues.

Carter appeared on The Doctors last week and spoke openly about his mental health diagnoses.

“The official diagnosis is that I suffer from multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety. I’m manic depressive,” he said, according to TooFab. “I’m prescribed to Xanax, Seroquel, gabapentin, hydroxyzine, trazodone, omeprazole.”

Despite needing to use prescription drugs to manage his condition, Carter said that he has been sober for two years. He revealed that he went to rehab in 2017 because he was huffing aerosol cans.

    His Mother’s Battle

Although he doesn’t appear to be doing well, he said on the show that his mother Jane is in desperate need for treatment for her alcohol use.

“My mother is struggling. She’s a very bad alcoholic,” he said. “Alcohol is her best friend… She’s ruined all of her relationships.”

He is afraid that if Jane doesn’t get help, her substance use will have deadly consequences. “What scares me the most is that she is dying. I feel like if she doesn’t get the help now, she’s going to die in the next six months to a year,” he said.

At the end of the show, Jane agreed to go to rehab.

Taking A Break For Mental Health

However, a few days later, Carter announced on Twitter that he is canceling part of his tour to focus on his mental health and family

“I have to put my health first and I hope you can all understand how much I need this time to heal and recharge my batteries,” he wrote on Twitter. “I love you. Stay strong. Stay healthy, and just know I’ll be back next year ready to go. But as a man, this is what I need to do to have some peace. Xo”

    Abuse From a Young Age

Thursday morning, Carter made a shocking allegation on social media, setting off a Twitterstorm on his feed. “My sister raped me from the age of 10 to 13 years old when she wasn’t on her medications and I was abused not only sexually by her but by my first two back up dancers when I was 8 years old. And my brother abused me my whole life,” he posted early this morning.

“I feel cleansed all my truth is out I just need to focus now on my music my career and supporting all victims of abuse and rape,” he tweeted.

This came a day after his older brother Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys shared that he filed a restraining order against Aaron, “in light of Aaron’s increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confession that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child.”

  • New "30 For 30" Explores Dennis Rodman's Addiction Battle, Tough Childhood

New "30 For 30" Explores Dennis Rodman's Addiction Battle, Tough Childhood

In the ESPN doc, Rodman gets candid about parenthood, surviving childhood trauma and living with addiction.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman is speaking out about his tough childhood, his substance abuse and his own issues as a father as part of a documentary about his life.

Speaking ahead of the release of his 30 for 30 ESPN documentaryDennis Rodman: For Better or WorseRodman told ESPN that he was trying to be a better dad to his three kids, who were born in 1988, 2000 and 2001.

“I want to,” he said. “But it isn’t so easy.”

    Living With Alcoholism

Rodman has struggled with alcohol abuse for years and has been in and out of rehab. Last December, Rodman relapsed, but said that he realized drinking was a mistake. He vowed to get back to 12-step meetings.

Speaking with ESPN, Rodman didn’t explicitly say whether he was sober or not at the moment. However, he did say that drinking isn’t his biggest challenge right now.

“We all have demons. I’ve had plenty,” Rodman said. “Alcohol being one of them—everyone knows that. But I think the only major demon I have right now is trying to convince myself that I am a good dad. That’s the worst one for me. And it’s so hard for me for some reason. It’s very hard for me to break out of that cycle, you know. You feel like it’s too late. It’s one of those things where I never had anyone ever want [to love me].”

    Navigating Fatherhood

He lives only a few miles from his youngest two children—who are now in their late teens—but he doesn’t have much of a relationship with them, he says. That’s partly because Rodman lacked a father figure in his life who could teach him how to be a dad. His own father didn’t have any contact with him until he flagged down Rodman one day while the star was on his way to NBA practice in 1997.

“This black guy runs up to my truck and says, ‘I need to talk to you. I need to talk to you.’ I said, ‘Dude, I’m late for practice.’ And he said, ‘I just want to let you know that I’m your father,’” Rodman recalled. “Out the blue, just like that. And I’m like, ‘Oh, come on, I gotta deal with this stuff today?’”

Later, during a game, Rodman’s father was signing autographs, and Rodman learned from a reporter that the man had written a book about him.

“I think it’s still a big joke, because this guy came out of the blue and I’ve never seen him before,” Rodman said. “I was so used to not having a father after 37 years, I’m thinking, ‘You know, it’s a little late. It’s a little late.’”

Rodman was unable to break the cycle of being an absent absent to his children, he said.

“I lie to myself a lot about shit,” Rodman said. “‘I’m a great dad. I love my kids.’ And then I have to go home and sit there and beat myself up because I’m just telling myself all these lies.”

  • Man Arrested For Giving Mac Miller Fake Oxy That Caused Fatal Overdose

Man Arrested For Giving Mac Miller Fake Oxy That Caused Fatal Overdose

When Miller was reported dead, the man allegedly sent a message to a friend saying, “Most likely I will die in jail.”

A 28-year-old Hollywood Hills man has been arrested in connection to the fatal overdose of rapper Mac Miller.

Cameron James Pettit has been charged with one count of distribution of a controlled substance and if convicted, faces a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, according to a Department of Justice press release.

“Pettit and others distributed narcotics to 26-year-old Malcolm James McCormick… approximately two days before McCormick suffered a fatal drug overdose in Studio City on September 7, 2018,” according to the DOJ statement.

A medical examiner ruled that the rapper died of mixed drug toxicity involving fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.

    Text Messages

Through a warrant, authorities obtained messages between Pettit and McCormick arranging for the rapper to purchase oxycodone, cocaine and Xanax from Pettit.

“But, instead of providing McCormick with genuine oxycodone when he made the delivery during the early morning hours of September 5, Pettit allegedly sold McCormick counterfeit oxycodone pills that contained fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin,” according to the DOJ statement.

Investigators believe the rapper’s fatal overdose was triggered by snorting the fake oxycodone provided by Pettit.

After McCormick was reported dead, Pettit sent a message to a friend saying, “Most likely I will die in jail.”

He said also said, “I’m gonna get off the grid…move to another country” four days after the rapper’s death, according to Heavy.

    Other Suspects

An investigation by the DEA is ongoing, with two other individuals suspected of supplying McCormick with drugs. They have not been charged, but a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles said other charges are possible.

“Fentanyl disguised as a genuine pharmaceutical is a killer, which is being proven every day in America,” said U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna. “Drugs laced with cheap and potent fentanyl are increasingly common, and we owe it to the victims and their families to aggressively target the drug dealers that cause these overdose deaths.”

More than 800 people are expected to attend a vigil marking the first anniversary of McCormick’s death at Blue Slide Park, which inspired his debut studio album of the same name. The vigil will take place at the park in Pittsburgh, his hometown, on Friday, Sept. 6th.

  • Robert Downey Jr: I Was Once Detained At Disneyland For Smoking Pot

Robert Downey Jr: I Was Once Detained At Disneyland For Smoking Pot

The “Iron Man” actor described being detained at the park for his pot use at a recent award ceremony.

Last month, when actor Robert Downey Jr. received the Disney Legends achievement award at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, it was a very different experience from his first trip to the park, when he was apprehended for smoking pot on the gondola ride.

“Here’s a bit of trivia for you. The very first time I went to Disneyland, I was transported to another place—within moments of being arrested,” Downey said, according to Marijuana Moment. “I was brought to a surprisingly friendly processing center, given a stern warning, and returned to, if memory serves, one very disappointed group chaperone.”

    Clearing The Air

Downey said that the moment had stuck with him for years, and receiving the award was the perfect opportunity to clear the air.

He said, “I’ve been sitting on that shame for a while and I‘m just going to release it here tonight.”

Then he took his moment in the spotlight to say sorry, and to crack a few jokes.

“I would like to make amends to whomever had to detain me for smoking pot in a gondola without a license,” he said. “And I don’t wanna further confuse the issue by insinuating that pot smoking licenses for the gondola are in any way obtainable or for any of the other park attractions.” He continued, “Maybe for the Imagineers, but that’s their own business.”

A Former President Got Caught Smoking There Too

Downey isn’t the only celebrity who has admitted to getting high in the Happiest Place On Earth. Last year, former President Barack Obama implied that he had also been kicked out of Disney for smoking marijuana during his college years, although he wasn’t as blunt as Downey, later backtracking to say he was smoking cigarettes on the ride.

“As we were coming in, these two very large Disneyland police officers… say ‘Sir, come with us,’” Obama recalled. “This is a true story. I was booted from the Magic Kingdom.”

As for Downey, his marijuana-smoking days are well behind him. Not only has the sober actor been embraced by Disneyland, he also received a full pardon by then-California Governor Jerry Brown in 2015 for charges he faced in 1996 when he was pulled over and found to be in possession of cocaine, heroin and a loaded gun.

“Job one is get out of that cave,” he told Vanity Fair in 2014. “A lot of people do get out but don’t change. So the thing is to get out and recognize the significance of that aggressive denial of your fate, come through the crucible forged into a stronger metal… But I don’t even know if that was my experience.”

Downey has since watched his own son battle with drug use.

“Pick a dysfunction and it’s a family problem,” he said.

  • Heather Locklear "Grateful" To Be Sober Ahead Of Rehab Stay

Heather Locklear "Grateful" To Be Sober Ahead Of Rehab Stay

The Spin City actress posted on social media after being ordered to a 30-day treatment program.

Heather Locklear is preparing to enroll in a month-long treatment program.

The Melrose Place actress was ordered by a judge to complete a 30-day treatment program after she pleaded no contest to eight misdemeanor charges for attacking police officers and EMTs on two separate occasions.

She posted a photo on Instagram of various items including a photo of her dog Mister and a notebook cover with the message “You’re still sober. Keep that shit up.” Locklear captioned the photo: “So grateful.”

Her post was met with supportive comments. “Good for you. Keep up the fight!” one said. “Stay strong! One day at a time,” another commented.

First responders were called to Locklear’s California home in February and June of 2018 for “disturbances” including a fight with her boyfriend in the February incident.

Following the June incident, Locklear was hospitalized for a possible overdose, People reported at the time.

That November, Locklear was placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold after her therapist determined that she was having a mental breakdown.

The actress had been charged with five misdemeanor counts of battery on a peace officer, two misdemeanor counts of resisting an officer and one misdemeanor count of battery on an emergency medical technician. Each carried a maximum sentence of one year in Ventura County jail.

    Personal Crisis

Locklear’s attorney Bill Haney said that she was going through a “personal crisis” that exacerbated the incidents. He said that she is “apologetic to the first responders who were present.”

Locklear will avoid a 120-day jail sentence if she completes the 30-day treatment program. She must enroll in treatment by September 6. Then, Locklear will be under three years of unsupervised probation during which she may not have weapons, non-prescribed medication or alcohol, according to Page Six.

Locklear is a six-time Golden Globe Award nominee for her roles in Melrose Place and Spin City.

    Legal Troubles

The actress has had her share of legal troublessince 2008, when she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription drugs. That year, she had sought help for depression and anxiety.

Despite the actress’ troubled history, people have come back from worse, and fans remain hopeful for Locklear.
